Culture and art in Murnau and the surrounding area

As the home of the "Blue Rider" movement and thus of Expressionism, Murnau plays an important role in art history. Even today, the nature around the Murnauer Moos still touches and inspires its viewers as it did Marc, Münter & Kandinsky back then. The lively cultural scene is a meeting place for numerous artists and creative people. In addition to the Franz Marc Museum and the Münter House, there are other art collections waiting to be discovered, such as the Murnau Castle Museum, the Buchheim Museum and the Penzberg Museum. The world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play, which only takes place every 10 years, is also a highlight in the calendar of events. It will happen again in 2030.

The "Blaue Reiter"

Murnau became world-famous thanks to the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, who lived with Gabriele Münter in what is now the Münter House from 1909 to 1914. The famous museum was also the founding site of the expressionist artists' association "Blauer Reiter", as Gabriele Münter, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc called themselves. The landscapes and colorful architecture of the site profoundly inspired their art and led to the development of Expressionism, with Kandinsky developing many of his revolutionary theories on abstraction and composition there. Other artists experimented with new forms of expression and techniques here, which had a lasting influence on the European art scene and developed an aesthetic that emphasized the depiction of emotions and spiritual ideas.
