History of the Alpenhof Murnau

In spite of the - in those days - not strongly developed tourism and in spite of the reservation of the locals about a building project of that scale in their little town of Murnau, the plan to build the hotel finally met with approval from all those involved. So, after 13 months of construction, the Alpenhof opened on July 16th, 1967.

Mr. Hoffmann had been certain right from the start on the profile of the house:  The character of the architecture and the interior decoration corresponded with the character of the landscape. The number of some more than 30 rooms was ideally predestined for a very individual hospitality, characterized by the competence, the friendliness and the charm of the employees. The absolutely quiet location appealed to the guests who wanted relaxation, as well as for those who wished to hold conferences or business-meetings, where they could fully concentrate and enjoy a high standard of accommodation.  And judging by the restaurant guidebooks, the cuisine of the Alpenhof has always been particularly praised.

This Profile correspond the concept oft the hotel collection Relais & Châteaux, which the Alpenhof Murnau has been a member form 1972 till the end of 2007. In 2008 the Alpenhof Murnau became a member of “Small Luxury Hotels of the World” due to the hotel enlarged offers, modification of key targets and the quick changes of the international Hotel market. Small Luxury Hotels of the World is one of the leading brands, when it comes to international well known luxurious hotels.

Crises have been unheard of. Under the direction of Hellmut Hofmann, the enterprise ran from the start with great success: The figures were right and, most important of all, by having gained in regard and popularity with the guests, the hotel ran steadily to capacity.

In the beginning of the nineties, Hellmut Hofmann - for health reasons - decided to sell the Alpenhof. Amongst the interested buyers, Erivan Haub was the one who not only had the material means at his disposal to take over the hotel and to guarantee excellent prospects for the future by way of strategic and vital investments, but also had a personal attachment to the house. He had stayed there with his family and regularly held conferences there with his management team. Hellmut Hofmann was therefore brought to entrust his successful entrepreneur-colleague with his "baby".

The handing-over took place in the spring of 1992. After a closure of some months, for extensive renovations, the Alpenhof Murnau opened its doors again in May of 1993.

Building operations, for ecological and other reasons, had been planned since 1995 and terminated in December of 1999, resulting in a doubling of the capacity. There are now 77 rooms and a health and fitness area with indoor swimming pool and full spa facilities, and of course the conference-rooms and the Institute CosMedial.

Those building operations changed much in the Alpenhof, with the benefit of a distinctly improved living-comfort with free time-activities and health and fitness possibilities for the guests. Unchanged, and as constant as ever, remains the hospitality that is the top priority concern of hotel-director and his staff of 90 employees from six nations.
